Reciclagem química promete plástico 100% reaproveitável

Uma nova certificação de processo de reciclagem química pode impulsionar o uso de embalagens flexíveis e filmes pós consumo na produção de novos plásticos no país.

O processo traz ao menos três vantagens para o meio ambiente: diminui a extração e o uso do nafta, o principal insumo petroquímico; absorve resíduos de difícil reciclagem mecânica e resulta em resina de qualidade compatível com controles sanitários, para usos até na indústria alimentícia. A promessa é de tornar o plástico 100% reciclável, a exemplo do vidro e do alumínio, com material reciclado com as mesmas qualidades do original. Reciclagem infinita.

A Braskem recebeu em fevereiro o primeiro selo brasileiro do ISCC Plus, Certificação Internacional de Sustentabilidade e Carbono, para a utilização de matéria-prima alternativa como o óleo de pirólise – processo químico que quebra as moléculas das resinas termoplásticas a partir do calor – para transformação em resina novamente.

A empresa já tinha o selo para a produção do polietileno feito a partir do etanol da cana-de-açúcar, o I’m green bio-based.

A nova certificação baseia-se no conceito de balanço de massa, que garante que a mesma quantidade de material reciclado que entra como matéria-prima no processo saia como produto final. Esse controle permite atestar a circularidade do produto nas duas unidades industriais da Braskem, uma no ABC, em São Paulo, e outra no Polo Petroquímico de Triunfo, no Rio Grande do Sul. A Braskem tem acordo de cooperação com a Fábrica Carioca de Catalisadores (FCC S.A.), o Senai e a COPPE/UFRJ para desenvolver o projeto.

A reciclagem química dos plásticos é essencial para processar muitos tipos de embalagens que não são aproveitáveis através da reciclagem mecânica. Plásticos filme, laminados, embalagens multicamadas e outras mais complexas, flexíveis e finas costumam sobrar nas cooperativas e em centrais mecanizadas de reciclagem. Sem recicladores que possam processá-los e sem valor de mercado, acabam sendo enviados a aterros sanitários.

“O material que sai da reciclagem mecânica pode ter impedimento de aplicação por causa das leis sanitárias, pela segurança alimentar. A resultante de reciclagem química não tem esse problema. Ela vira um líquido, através da pirólise, e o produto que sai pode ser idêntico ao original e sem contaminação. É a reciclagem infinita”, afirma Luiz Alberto Falcon, responsável pela plataforma de Reciclagem Química da Braskem.

“O problema do vazamento do plástico na natureza é grave e temos de lidar com ele. Mas acreditamos que há inúmeras aplicações em que o plástico é a melhor solução como embalagem final, quando se analisam ciclo de vida e pegada de carbono”, diz Falcon.

Falcon diz que várias indústrias têm mostrado interesse comercial nas possibilidades dessas resinas feitas com reciclados, com destaque para a indústria de alimentos, que precisa cumprir suas metas de sustentabilidade.

Atualmente a Braskem compra o óleo de pirólise de usinas recicladoras e o incorpora o material na receita de poliestileno e polipropileno. Mas, segundo Falcon, a empresa se interessa em desenvolver toda a cadeia e pode entrar em outras etapas, deixar de ser apenas compradora, para aumentar o número de plantas de pirólise ativas.

“A reciclagem química é uma necessidade e as petroquímicas do mundo estão atrás de soluções desse tipo”, diz Falcon. A Braskem tem dois projetos em desenvolvimento nos Estados Unidos.

Um deles é com a Encina Development Group para desenvolver polipropileno reciclado de alta qualidade para embalagens de alimentos e produtos de consumo e higiene. A empresa quer processar 175.000 toneladas de resíduos plásticos convertendo-os em mais de 90.000 toneladas de produtos químicos reciclados por ano em uma nova instalação. O outro é com a Agilyx, empresa de reciclagem avançada de fluxos de plástico pós-uso difíceis de reciclar para conversão novos plásticos virgens equivalentes, produtos químicos e combustíveis.

A Braskem se associou à iniciativa de Economia Circular Neutra de Carbono, com meta de aumentar seu portfólio de produtos reciclados I’m green para vendas de 300.000 toneladas até 2025 e 1 milhão de toneladas até 2030.
